Argonne Forest

Argonne Forest
The Argonne Forest is a wooded plateau region of northeastern France, bounded by the Aisne and Meuse Rivers. The area covers parts of the departments of Ardennes, Meuse, and Maine, and extends to the Belgian border. The forest, which also contains steep cliffs and wide river valleys, is a natural area of defense for France. During the french revolution in 1792, the French general dumouriez led a successful campaign there against the Prussians, culminating in the victory of Valmy. During the franco-prussian war, in 1870, the Argonne was the scene of the French army's retreat under Marshal mac-mahon, culminating in the battle of Sedan. In 1918, during World War I, the Argonne was again the site of a major battle (see Argonne, Battle of).
